The 4th Degree Exemplification was held on March 22 in College Park.  St. John Neumann Assembly is pleased to welcome six new Sir Knights to our ranks.  These men are Jeff Rolf, Romeo Paternoster, James Peters, Michael McFadden, Michael Marquez and William Moore .  I am confident that each of these knights will become an active member in our Assembly and help us to grow and prosper.

Everyone should have their Spring Trip Raffle tickets by now.  Please buy a ticket or two and sell the rest to friends or relatives.  This joint venture with Sacred Heart Council will hopefully bring much needed funding for our patriotic and charitable programs.

Our Sir Knight of the Month for March was Dr. Richard Nalesnik.  Richard is a Trustee and served as the Chairman of the Assembly’s Patriotic Essay contest.  His efforts in managing this important patriotic program has been very beneficial not only to the Assembly, but in giving our youth the opportunity to define the proper role of a Catholic citizen in a free society and also in strengthening the bond between the Knights of Columbus and our regional Catholic education programs.

In that regard, our Essay contest is progressing nicely.  The essays are in the final step in the judging process and we expect to announce the winners about April 15.  The prizes of $100, $75 and $50 will be awarded at a yet to be determined ceremony.

Our Nominating Committee for next year’s officer positions will be Faithful Admiral and PFN Rich Boehm (410) 604-3076 and Trustee and SK Ed Walsh (301) 809-3826.  Please contact one of these SKs if you are interested in serving as an officer for your Assembly

Please read the Master’s log on one Page 3 for an explanation of the Supreme Council’s decision ask us to cease adding “born and unborn” as an addendum to the Pledge of Allegiance.

In closing, Karen and I wish everyone a Happy and Joyous Easter season.

Faithful Associate Friar’s Report

SK Deacon Andrew J. Nosacek

Whatever is true, whatever is honorable,

whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is

lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any

excellence, if  there is anything worthy of praise,

think about these things.  Phil 4:8.

The main habits that make a man “manly”, in a spiritual sense

or even in a temporal sense, are what the Church calls the

“cardinal virtues”.  The scriptural Book of Wisdom tells us:

If anyone loves righteousness, [Wisdom’s] labors are virtues;

for she teaches temperance and prudence, justice, and courage.” Wis 8:7.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church describes these moral virtues:

Prudence - disposes practical reason to discern our true good

in every circumstance and to choose the right means  of

achieving it; (not to be confused with timidity or fear).

Justice – consists in the constant and firm will to give their due

to God and neighbor; promotes equity with regard to

     persons and common good.

Fortitude – ensures firmness in difficulties and consistency in

the pursuit of    the good; resists temptations and overcomes

     obstacles in moral life.

Temperance – moderates the attraction of pleasures and pro

vides balance in the use of created goods; ensures the will’s

mastery over instincts and keeps desires within the limits of

     what is honorable.

This is a good time to examine our inner selves and see how

we stack up in these “good habits.” The Church calls our

attention to a most remarkable man, namely St. Joseph, the

Spouse of the Blessed Virgin.  Scripture describes him as “a just

man” (Mt. 1:19) who was called by God “to take Mary as

your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the

Holy Spirit.”  The Catechism points out that this “just man” is

distinguished by habitual right thinking and the upright

ness of his conduct.  Thus it is wise for us to take St. Joseph

as our model in forming the habits of the cardinal virtues.  If we

do then our first steps to being “a just man” will be a cause to

celebrate St. Joseph’s feast day.

These words of St. Augustine should inspire us:To live well

is nothing other than to love God with all one’s heart, with

all one’s soul and with all one’s efforts; from this it comes

about that love is kept whole and uncorrupted (through

temperance).  No misfortune can disturb it (and this is forti

tude).  It obeys only [God] (and this is justice), and is careful

in discerning things, so as not to be surprised by deceit or

trickery (and this is prudence).

                 HAPPY EASTER

St. John N. Neumann (1811-1860)

HIS FASCINATING LIFE STORY

The Bishop of Philadelphia lay crumpled in the snow a few blocks from his new cathedral on Logan Square.  By the time a priest reached him with the holy oils, Bishop Neumann was dead. That was January 5, 1860.  At his own request Bishop Neumann was buried in a basement crypt in Saint Peter's Church where he would be with his Redemptorist confreres

SK Charles Smallwood Master’s Log

Let’s not let go of March just yet.  Recall the following:  March started for AWD District with an Exemplification for the clergy and any disabled members in the Archdiocese of Washington District.  There were 6 members in this class that received the honors of the Fourth Degree.   We were so proud to have in this class Bishop Barry C. Knestout for whom he was named the honoree for this degree.  Next daylight saving time began, followed by continued planning for the March 22nd Exemplification of the Fourth Degree in College Park.  Then there is St. Patrick’s Day March 17, 2009, and Maryland State Founder’s Day ceremonies on March 29, 2009.  For some of these exercises provided opportunities for us to work harder to broaden the scope of our duties toward bringing new people into the Fourth Degree of our Order.  March ending signals a time for spring – a time for prayer, reflection a time for renewal and a second chance.  This brings us to April, with Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter.  To top it off, winter ended and spring officially began.  During this month you should be working to finalize, if you have not already done so, your list of officers for 2010 goals, activities, budgets and other important dates (Installation of Officers) for your Assembly.

During April we usually see the signs of change.  Cherry Blossoms abound as well as many other buds and a splash of color comes back to our yards.  All of these are external signs, but what about internal changes.  Is your inner self ready with a splash of color?  Are changes seen in your behavior?  Are some needed?  With April we begin the fourth quarter of the Columbian Year.  There is still time to implement programs.  How can we as Sir Knights of the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus do more for God, Country, and The Order?

I ask you all to help me work with our members and councils to understand that when we say the pledge, we should not end the pledge with “Born and the Unborn” as those groups are included in the statement …”to the republic for which it stands, ONE NATION UNDER GOD, indivisible, and justice FOR ALL.”   We are fighting many issues that are trying to destroy the core of our Catholic faith.  I ask that we work to support those core principles such as life, ONE NATION UNDER GOD, stem cell issues, etc. and refrain from adding words to the pledge of allegiance..

When Jesus told Peter, he was to be given the Keys of the Kingdom; he was turning over control of all earthly assets to Peter.  Peter was to speak for God, and contracts entered into by Peter would be binding on God.  This is where the authority to forgive sins, ordain priests, and teach Faith and Morals comes from.  Peter had the keys!  As Bishop of Rome that authority sits with Benedict XVI.  This is an awesome responsibility and is only possible with the help of the Holy Spirit.  Please keep our Holy Father in your prayers at all time, but especially during April.

I shall close by saying thank you for all you are doing to promote the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus.  In your time of prayer, please remember Former Master Edward Srsic, who returned home to the Lord on Palm Sunday in April, 2007.  SK Ed Srsic was dedicated to God, Country, Family, and the Order.    His body is whole once again as he is in heaven looking down on us providing us with his heavenly prayer.  May he and all our fallen Sir Knights rest in peace?

Let’s make sure we keep “Building our Communities through Service, Charity, Unity and Fraternity.” Also know we are One Nation Under God, but it does come at a price.  God Bless America and God Bless you and your families!
