KNIGHTS of COLUMBUS SACRED HEART COUNCIL 2577 St.JOHN N. NEUMANN ASSEMBLY 1763 Accolade Mar. 2009 |

Chaplain’s Report Rev. Msgr. Charles Parry As we enter the heart of the Season of Lent, let us all be well aware that our Blessed Lord in His own way, and in His own time, and by His own special grace is constantly calling us and drawing us - each one of us - to Himself! So very often these graces of conversion and this invitation and reaching out to each one of us takes place in quiet and gentle ways, slowly but surely! I am so grateful to Our Lord for the graces given to my older brother, who having left the Church at the age of 19 (just lost interest) has recently returned to the Catholic Church after a 36-year absence. Like many, perhaps, he left not in anger and not in rebellion and not over any theological difference - he just lost interest. For all these years Our Lord has been reaching out waiting for the right time in his life to call him back. And my brother has recently responded! Re-discovering the mystery of the Eucharist, he longs to be reunited with the Church. Preparing now for a good confession and looking to make things right, his official return will be realized sometime before Easter! We must never lose hope. With your own children and family members, we all know people who have left the Church. It is painful to us. It is a heartache. In the eyes of Almighty God, the 36-year absence of my brother is like a blink of an eye - although to us it is half a lifetime! During this Lent, let each of us choose someone who has left the Church, let us pray for them by name during these holy days, and let us ask graces for them that they may come closer to our Lord and maybe one step closer to a blessed return to the Catholic Faith! ______________________ Grand Knight’s Report Kevin Kylus (410) 451-8855 Many thanks are in order for the activities we enjoyed in February. The month started with our annual Super Bowl party, which was a huge success once again, thanks to the hard work of Rick Marek, PGK Rich Boehm, and PGK Dave Grawbowski. Then came Ladies Night, one of the nicest events of the year. Chaired by PGK Jim Seidleck, it was everything it should be, with a great dinner and wonderful entertainment. Thanks also to Jim Nelson, Ray DeVous, Dominic DiGregory and Joe Bobby for all their work. We hosted a ceremony during which we distributed almost $12,000 in proceeds from the Tootsie Roll Drive to local organizations who work with those with intellectual disabilities. Jim Gallagher, PGK Dave Grabowski, Tony DePaul, and Dominic DiGregory made this an impressive event. A host of members and their wives put together another great Shrove Tuesday Pancake Super that was enjoyed by large numbers of members and their families. You may have noticed that I have named a lot of names this month. This is to illustrate how many people are needed to run the great programs and events we all enjoy and sometimes take for granted. We, the officers, receive the compliments and awards but they are the ones who deserve them and more help is always needed, so pick an area and get involved. Hopefully we will see you at one or more of the events this month. March has two St. Patrick’s Day events, a Sunday Family Breakfast and meals every Friday in the Knights Room. Knight of the Month for February - Jim Gallagher. Jim could be found almost everyday at the Hall with a hammer or a paintbrush working on a Building Association project. Then he also found time to be Awards Chairman for our Public Safety Officer Recognition Program and to organizing our Tootsie Roll distribution ceremony. Thank you Jim. Family of the Month for February - PGK Jim Seidleck, his wife Mary and their sons Billy and Danny. The entire Seidleck family contributed to the success of Ladies Night this year and can usually be found working behind the scenes helping make our programs and events run smoothly. Thank you Seidleck’s ___________________________________ District Deputy’s Report Vernon Hawkins, PGK, FN, FDW (301) 336-0284
March! As we begin the month of March we begin to look forward to Spring and forget about the past Winter. During Spring, we begin planning for the clean up of our houses, yards, gardens, etc. and prepare for planting our seeds for our beautiful Summers flowers. March should also begin the time where each Council begins to clean-up those projects, programs, and effort that have been hanging-on through the winter. Each Council should also begin planning to plant those seeds that will bloom in the next Fraternal Year. An important seed to plant is, of course, new members. In District 6 we have a perfect opportunity over the next couple of months to recruit new members. What a way to begin planning for the next Fraternal Year with new and fresh members, with new and innovative ideas. On Sunday, March 29th, 2009, the Maryland State Council will celebrate the 127th anniversary of our Order. The celebration begins with the Founders’ Day Mass at 3:00 P.M. at St. John’s Church located at 689 Ritchie Highway, Severna Park, MD. ______________________ Deputy Grand Knight’s Report Andrew Jacobson (240) 476-5268
They say that March begins with a roar and it certainly will with the Membership activities in the Council. Director, and Warden, Joe Massamini, has a full blitz package scheduled for each of the first three Sundays of the month. Please look for details on the schedule Joe has planned in this issue of The Accolade, or contact Joe if you are available to work these blitzes and support recruiting efforts for the Council. Council activities of the month include a Dinner/Dance on the 14th and a Knights Room on the 17th to celebrate the feast of St. Patrick ______________________ Fraternal Activities Rick Marek (410) 721-0004 rickmarek1@comcast.net
I want to thank everyone who helped make the Super Bowl Party the fun and successful Council event it was. I want to also thank everyone for the many compliments we received on the delicious food…but I am unable to come to your house to fix a big pot of the seafood chowder for your next family gathering ________________________ Family Activities Joe Bobby (301) 464-2862
Let’s take a new approach to our family and how they grow strength from being with the Knights. Working on our events with your family members brings a great deal of satisfaction and joy to the family. PGK’s Buck and Mike Garner demonstrate this every time they cook a meal together and that is rather frequently. They did the Maryland Stuffed Ham dinner just a few weeks ago and are handling the St Patrick’s Day Party in the Knights Room. When they are in the kitchen there is constant, good-natured bantering. Bill Macri and his wife assist in cooking our Sunday Family Breakfasts and Jim Seidleck has his sons with him frequently when we set up for events. And we have a new Knight in our Council who immediately volunteered to assist in the kitchen and have been bringing his daughters to the Hall when he is helping and they are deeply interested in the K of C and the charities we support. And of course we have Bob Long and Gary Harash and their wives and my son Kevin who joins me and serves the meals on some Friday nights. It is obvious that they draw strength from one another and enjoy working together. So we are still in need of Brother Knights and family members to volunteer to assist at all our events. If you can spare some time on a Friday evening primarily, please let me know when you are available to assist and I will include you and your family in my schedule. See you around the Hall. __________________________________ Membership Report Joe Massimini (240) 997-0402 March is Blitz month for the Knights. We will be holding blitzes at Saint Pius X, Sacred Heart and Saint Edward's during March. If you can help with any of the blitzes, please contact me so I know how many people I can count on for talking to prospective candidates. Right now the schedule has us with a blitz at Saint Pius X on February 28th and March 1st, at Saint Edwards on March 7th and 8th and at Sacred Heard on March 14th and 15th. Any help would be appreciated during any of the membership blitzes. If you have any questions, please contact me either via e-mail at joemassi@comcast.net, or by the phone at (240) 997-0402. ________________________________________ Sick and Memorial Bob Long, (301) 464-1319 Sick or Recovering Brothers James Boruke Robert Costenbader Ed Dosek, HLM Jack Finzel Frank Fitzmaurice, HLM Thomas A. You may want to consider a permanent life insurance product – one with guaranteed cash values – that offers a limited period of premium payments. The Knights of Columbus offers three permanent life insurance products for which premiums do not have to be paid for all of life. "Twenty Pay Life" is exactly as the name suggests – a permanent plan with premiums payable for only 20 years. After the premiums are paid for the 20 years, the plan is "paid up" and no more premiums are due. Unlike its term counterpart, however the plan stays in force, the death benefits remain intact and the guaranteed cash value continues to grow. Another such plan is our "Life Paid Up at 65." You buy this permanent product and you only pay premiums to age 65. Then, premiums stop (just in time for retirement), but the plan remains very much in force. Finally, the ultimate in limited pay is our Single Premium Life product. Imagine buying life insurance – permanent life insurance – and only paying one single premium? It’s possible. I have detailed information on all of these products. At your convenience, I’ll meet with you and your spouse to perform a free, custom-tailored needs analysis, to help determine which of our many life insurance products is right for you and your family. Call John Canter at (301) 261-3231 or Al Rocca, FICF, at (301) 464-5885 to set up an appointment today. We want to hear from you _________________________________________ Youth Activities Tom O’Connor (301) 464-1729 tao.cpa@verizon.net My thanks to Mark Davis for running the Free Throw Contest in my absence. Among the pro-life issues that will be facing the Maryland legislature this year are bills concerning stem cell research and the death penalty. There are also other bills on which the Maryland Catholic Conference has taken a position. They concern poverty, immigration, marriage, the BOAST Maryland Tax Credit to increase incentives for business investment in education, and textbook funding for nonpublic schools. ____________________________________ Church Activities George Vincent (301) 249-6399 k3gv@verizon.net First Friday Mass and Mini-Supper: Our First Friday Mass is on March 6th. Please come and join us in this celebration of joy in the Eucharist. Mass starts at 7:00 PM. Mass will be followed by a mini-supper. Everyone is welcome. Year of the Volunteer: Supreme Knight Carl Anderson is calling for increased volunteer action throughout the United States in response to the economic crisis and the decreasing number of donations to charitable organizations. The Knights of Columbus is a leader in volunteerism. Cumulative figures show that during the past decade, the Knights of Columbus has donated nearly $1.28 billion to charity, and provided in excess of 612 million hours of volunteer service in support of charitable causes. Knights of Columbus across the country are helping families in tough times with very young children by gathering donations of baby food and diapers from shoppers at grocery stores. In January, Knights in Washington, D.C., distributed winter coats to needy children, in the latest addition to the Order's "Help a Child in Need" program. It was the first of three distributions scheduled for major cities in the United States. As we face difficult economic times, it is important to remember that though money may be tight right now, everyone can still contribute in other ways. Give of your time and your talent. As always, if there are any other Church activities that you would like to see happen in Sacred Heart Council, please do not hesitate to contact me. ________________________________________________ 11th Annual Gabriel Network Golf Tournament David Grabowski, PGK (301) 464-2059 The 11th Annual Gabriel Golf Tournament will be held at 8:30 AM on Friday June 19th, 2009 at the Bowie Country Club Golf Course. Funds raised from the tournament will be used to pay the costs of housing mothers and their new born babies and providing job skill training and scholarships. I can taste that first beer already. Here are some of our Council activities during March. First, we start the month with a Third Degree on Sunday the 1st and some 40+ members of the Knights at the Naval Academy will receive their Third Degree along with other Brother Knights. The Council meetings will be on the second and fourth Thursday evenings this month. Our intent is to continue with a meatless meal each Friday evening during Lent and I think we have had lots of suggestions on meals. Kevin is determined to run Friday night meals for a year to see if you will support the events and so far the results look promising. In addition, we are trying to get our meal menu out early in the week to assist you in your decision process. We will continue with our Council Sunday Family Breakfast on the second Sunday from 9 AM through noon. The price is right and we served over a hundred breakfasts in February. This is a lot of work by a lot of the Brother Knights and their families but we all completely support this Family Activity. And then there is always the set-up and cleanup associated with it and we could use some help. Next we have the St Patrick’s Dinner Dance on Saturday the 14th and the St Patrick’s Day party on the 17th. And there is a First Degree scheduled for the fourth Thursday meeting. Just to give you a heads-up there will not be a meeting on Holy Thursday, April 9th. I will be seeing many of you around the Hall hopefully assisting in all the various activities that are going on. Until next month… _____________________________________________________________________ Golf League Meeting Bob Mackey (410) 798-4257 The 2009 season is about to begin.
